Choosing Topics
Encourage students to write about what really interests them – what they care about, what they know, what they observe, how they feel about things. Model writing your own list of poetry topics as well.
The Seasons: Summertime, Winter, Fall
Sports: Basketball, Baseball
Pets: My Dog
Nature: Flowers, Butterflies, Mountains
Favorite places: At the Beach
Family: My Brother/Sister
School/Friends: Recess, All My Friends
Feelings: Surprise Party
Hobbies: Playing Baseball
Begin an anchor chart, and title it Topics to Write About
Have students begin writing their own topics list in a place that they can refer back to all year! We wrote ours on the last page of our writing journal.
